Heatons Men In Sheds
DIY WORKSHOPS ARE BACK. We are running two more basic workshops on Monday evenings in cooperation with Sustainable Living in the Heatons, Repair Café. Course 1 October 6th, 13th, 20th 27th and Course 2 November 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th. Each session will take place in the HMIS workshop at St Pauls Church Heaton Moor. There is a nominal charge of £40.00 total per person for the 4 week course.. This is to cover the cost of materials over the 4 weekly sessions. If you are interested in attending please contact heatonsrepaircafe@slheatons.orgThe course covered basic fixings and their means of delivery. That’s hammers and nails, screws and screwdrivers and more sophisticated fixings for internal stud walls. We looked at how and where to fix things in the garden and built bird & bat boxes. We tackled the art of assembling flat pack furniture and on our final session put up a variety of shelves. All those taking part were good sports and hopefully learned some new techniques. Underlying the course was the importance of health and safety precautions including PPE, planning and risk assessment. ... See MoreSee Less

Actually, we are meeting…virtually

Lockdown has meant no more meetings in the shed for the time being, however, one of the main aims of HMIS is to tackle social isolation in older men in the community. A plan was hatched involving virtual meetings using Zoom software. HMIS is now meeting, virtually, twice a week via the internet. Members are chatting with each other, making sure each member is OK and generally keeping their spirits up. There have been a couple of quizzes and an online picture show to keep participants amused.
